Discovering the city is a great way to connect with colleagues, clients and (potential) business and collaboration partners. Amsterdam offers a diverse range of incentive activities for meetings and events visitors. The city is home to world-famous canals, dozens of museums, historic sights and memorable group activity options.
Getting to the city centre
Getting to Amsterdam city centre from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol couldn’t be easier. Trains run frequently to Amsterdam Central Station, getting you to the heart of the action in 20 minutes. Taxis are also available to pre-book or hail that will shuttle you to the centre.
Once you arrive in Amsterdam, you'll find everything is close by. Hotels, venues, restaurants and attractions are all connected by modern and efficient public transport system and your travel time will rarely exceed 30-45 minutes. Trams, buses, metro, ferries, and, of course, cycle lanes make getting to all corners of the city hassle free.
Sustainable hotels, luxury hotels, business-focused stays and wellness stays are all available in Amsterdam, whether you want to stay near the historic canals or near large meeting venues like the RAI. With quality guaranteed, see our list of accommodation recommendations.
Things to see
Among the best things about Amsterdam are its cultural attractions, from world-renowned art institutions like the Rijksmuseum to modern galleries like FOAM photography museum. Groups can take a stroll around the museum, book an audio tour or a guided tour. Historic architecture can also be found on every corner of the city, best seen with a walking or cycling tour. In good weather don’t miss the abundant public parks and gardens.
Things to do
Amsterdam boasts a packed cultural agenda, helping you to make the most of each day of your visit. Venues like the Royal Concertgebouw, the Dutch National Opera and Ballet and the International Theatre Amsterdam are highly regarded for their world-class performances. Taking a canal cruise is considered a ‘must do’ for first-time visitors. Canal cruises can include drinks and/or dinner.
The I amsterdam City Card
The I amsterdam City Card is your all-access ticket to major highlights and more than 70 museums, public transport, a canal cruise and bicycle hire. You can save money and get exclusive discounts at restaurants, attractions and concerts.
If you find yourself with more time on your hands, or you’re familiar with Amsterdam already, take a day trip to one of the many beautiful sites on the outskirts of the city. If you’re visiting in spring, the Flower Strip and famous Keukenhof Gardens are a popular choice to take in the wonders of the Netherlands’ flower trade. In the summer, Amsterdam Beach offers an escape from the city bustle. The nearby town of Haarlem has must-see architecture, renowned lunch spots and boutiques. The Zaanse Schans offers a perfectly preserved glimpse into the Netherlands' industrial past, and the charming fishing village of Volendam is a must-see for its traditional wooden buildings and homes.
Amsterdam has a diverse selection of retail options. For luxury stores, head to De Bijenkorf department store on Dam Square, or the PC Hooftstraat for designer names. High street brands are easily found in Kalverstraat near Dam Square, or wander around the De 9 Straatjes (Nine Streets) for an eclectic collection of boutiques, independent brands and vintage treasures. Alternatively, hop on a train to Batavia Stad Fashion Outlet.
Rest and relaxation
A break between meetings can mean the ideal time for you to recharge your batteries. Some hotels have a fitness centre and/or spa or swimming pool, while saunas and beauty and wellness salons are available throughout the city.
Private and group dining
Places to eat and drink are easy to find in Amsterdam. If you’re in a large group, plenty of restaurants – from rooftop eateries to large waterfront diners – are happy to accommodate. Alternatively, many restaurants have private dining areas where networking can continue over a sit-down meal or small bites.
